Child Discipline

When I was younger and I did something bad, my mama would go and get the belt and tear me up because what I did was wrong and that was how she was letting me know. Timeouts? Naw, didn't get that. A good yelling at? Yeah I got that, but I also got my tail whooped too just so I would know not to do it again or I would get worse.

Nowadays it seems as if ppl have shunned child discipline. No one wants to beat their kids anymore. WHY? Spare the rod and spoil the child. Isn't that how the saying goes?

I mean come on, we all got at least one spanking, beating, whooping, beatdown, or whatever you want to call it back our heyday, so why so much controversy about it now. I remember growing up in the pjs and if you was in the street doing something you had no business doing, our parents would come right out in that street and whoop you in front of your friends and act like it was nothing. You would cry, your friends would laugh and you would be shamed, but at the end of the day, you still had love for your parents and all was well.

So what is the deal today? What do you guys think? Let me know.

This is interesting because i can relate alot to what u said. I did get whoopings and i can appreciate them now because it help discipline me and make me into the man i am now. It also help set a path for the way i want my kids raised. But, things are changing now because new laws have come about due to the fact that sum parents have gotten outrageous and going as far as killing or damn near killing their kids. you know? So, there is a more cautious state to the whole discipline thing now. I know kids r gonna misbehave and act out @ sum point but, come on parents, don't kill em. teach em!

Believe it or not, I never got a whooping in my life. My mother's "look" and "voice" was enough to keep me in check when I did something wrong.

It seems to be a breakdown in communication between parent and child these days. Instead of talking to the child, they would rather just get the belt. Temporary pain does not always solve the issue, considering that so many kids can recall all the whoopings they've had.

I think it really depends on the child and the situation. All kids are different and they react to differently to certain punishments. However, everything does not warrant a parent to pull out a belt. I've seen children get beat over the smallest things, it almost seems like borderline child abuse. If anything, that should be the last resort.

I know what your talking about, how I was raised all that my mother had to say was "meet me in my bedroom" and you knew you were in for it. I think people have shunned it today because child abuse is becomming more apparent and the price for commiting those crimes is high. Especially in adoption, the foster parents are not allowed to "spank" the children so timeouts are used instead. I was spanked as a child, and I'm very glad I was, I will do it to my children too, but what people don't seem to realize is that majority of parents who spank their children are not doing it out of hate, but love. They don't want their children growing up to be brats!

I believe that parents now a days are lazy and don't want to take the time to educate their children. Kids grow up doing whatever they want simply bc a parent finds it easaier to give in rather then battle against temper tantrums. each child is different and what may work for one child may nt work for the other, but consistancy and patience pays off to those who are willing to practice it. Parents are too busy wanting to be their children's friends rather then their parents. On the other hand today's society requires both parents to work leaving no time to discipline a child. It's a no win situation. Posted by Martha Dudinetz on July 13th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
